Battery life [HP iPAQ 514 - 146093]

A number of posts at other websites have commented on woeful battery life for this phone, whilst others have praised it.

Can anyone post from their own experience.

It was down to this or a HTC Touch, but apparently the Touch suffers from the slow processor speed.

TIA,

Si.

Tha battery life for the Ipaq 514 is excellent. I think people who've criticized it probably connected to their pc via usb cable and this doesn't always give a full charge even when you get the big complete tick. I think the better way to charge is using the wall charger.

btw these phones are great, I recommend them.

Cheers.

How rich an experience is web browsing on it? I'm trying to decide on a HTC Touch, this, or the new Ipaq 214 and my Nokia 6021 as a combo.

Hi,

Batterylife has been great for a month and now it lasts like a little more than half a day. I have ensured all things like bluetooth etc have been turned off.

Gordon, how are you charging it - via USB or via the mains?

Oh, and one other thing - any dust between the LCD and the outer screen on yours after a months use?

Thanks,

Simon.

I have found excactly the same if i charge via a USB it runs flat quick. Plug it in the wall and it last 3 days.

As I suspected - I wonder whether charging via USB isn't conditioning the battery properly.

I bought 3 IPAQ 514s for our business use, we always charge them via the Mains, but after a couple of weeks the Batteries die in less than a day! At first they were great, holding a charge for a couple of days, then all of a sudden they won't hold a charge!

I could maybe understand 1 doing it, put it down to a bad battery, but all 3?? That has to be a general battery fault!

Either that, or when you connect it to the computer to update software ot file transfer, it's screwing up the battery life.

 Anyone got any ideas/thoughts?

Mick!

In my experience if you charge them via the usb it doesn't hold it's charge but if you charge them with the wall charger it holds the charge much better.

Hi Bleph24..

Definately not the case! ...and before anyone says I may not be charging it correctly, I'm an IT technician, I own my own Computer & DVD shop in Cyprus. I have not put my IPAQ anywhere near the computer, I always charge via the mains, and only transfer data via Bluetooth or my Micro SD Card.

Although the phone itself is a FANTASTIC piece of kit, I do believe that there is a problem with the batteries..

Mick!

I just called HP on this since I was experiencing the same problem. Batteries went dead within 12 hours without using it! They told me it was because there are still applications running in the background. They told me to:

  • push shortcuts (when on the home screen it is the physical button above the red phone button.
  • 6 list running programs
  • menu
  • kill all

If this would not work they would send me a new battery!

I will update on this!

I did as HP suggested and now the battery life is excellent! I've been out yesterday, taking pictures, calling a lot, playing around with wifi and bluetooth and the battery indicator is still more than half and I charged it yesterday morning.

It is a bit annoying that you have the "kill all" function but I guess that is a windows smartphone issue...

I will not install an extra program that terminates programs running in the background such as spb plus does for my pda because I guess it will only use up battery life...
